Week 1 / January 9 - Overflow In Me: Fellowship with the Holy Spirit / Self-Control (Elementary) & Jesus Teachers Me Important Things (Preschool)
Family Discussion Guide
Discuss the questions below with your family. (These can be asked during mealtimes, in the car, before bed, etc.)
Adults Ask:
For Elementary: Whoever holds the remote control, holds the power! Am I right?! If only we had the power to control ourselves the way we can control the TV or streaming service. That is why all this month we are focusing on practicing Self-Control. We define self-control as “Choosing to do what you should even when you don’t want to.” Self-Control is a fruit of the Spirit; it’s one of the evidences that God is working in our lives and we are growing in our faith.
Why is self-control so important? Why can’t we just do what we feel like doing?
How can losing control cause trouble for you - and others around you?
Read Proverbs 25:28 together. How does that relate to having self-control?
For Preschoolers: Did you know that Jesus was a teacher? Jesus teaches us important things, including that we are important to God! Like sheep are important to a shepherd, we are important to God. What does a shepherd do to show that their sheep are important to them? They care for them, protect them, feed them, and even go looking for them when they are lost.
In the story of the shepherd and the lost sheep, who is the shepherd?
How did the shepherd show he loved his sheep?
Open your Bible and read the story of the Lost Sheep found in Luke 15:3-7.
Kids Ask:
Who is the Holy Spirit?
Can you talk to the Holy Spirit at any time or just at church?
Has the Holy Spirit ever said anything to you? How does he communicate to us?
