Sermon Recap
Pastor Matt opens up the sermon by drawing a parallel between how parents want to instill a sense of thankfulness in their kids, and how God wants us (his children) to be thankful. In fact, we find in scripture that the opposite of thankfulness is complaining, and complaining arouses God’s anger. In light of what God has done for us, we see him completely justified to be displeased by a people who neglect to acknowledge his goodness. We actually see instances in scripture where leaders were appointed just for the sole purpose of giving thanks and reminding the community to be thankful.
In Luke 17, we find the story of the 10 lepers who were healed, only one of which returned to thank Jesus. We like to think we would be the one, but would we? Do our lives express our gratitude towards the Lord? Does our perspective constantly see from a position of disadvantage and wanting, or can we give God the praise no matter our circumstances? In fact, the Christians’ ability to be thankful despite difficult circumstances is what should set us apart from others. Joy should be our superpower! James 1 says that we should consider pure joy when we face trials. Imagine that level of thankfulness. With a proper understanding of what God has done for us, this is how we will operate!
Lastly, the way we express our gratitude is just as important. In the Old Testament, individuals were instructed to bring their fellowship offerings of thankfulness “with their own hands.” Every law of God was an intentional way from him to teach his people. The reason they needed to use their hands was because thankfulness was more than just a phrase, it led people to show their gratitude in tangible ways.

Discussion Questions
Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.
Recall a time you were the most thankful. What were the circumstances?
Have you ever seen someone completely ungrateful, how did it make you feel?
How do you think God feels when we complain?
Being thankful isn’t just something you do, it’s something you are. What do you think that means?
In Luke 17 we read about the 10 lepers who didn’t express their gratitude, are their things you have failed to recognize God’s goodness in?
James says we should be thankful in trials. Are there any instances where you can see how God has produced good things in you through the trials? Are you able to be thankful for them?
Thankfulness should not just be verbal, what can you do “with your hands” to express your thankfulness?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for thinking that I am entitled to more than I have. Forgive me for complaining against you and failing to live out the riches of joy you have provided for me. God, help me lift my eyes towards a heavenly perspective, enabling me to see your goodness and blessing even when others can’t. Holy Spirit, give me insight to see how you are working even the toughest circumstances out for my benefit. Jesus, my heart is stirred to honor you. May I serve others every opportunity I have as a way to thank you for the way you have served me. Amen.
Life Application
Start a gratitude list in a journal. Be creative - Hang it on your fridge, add to it during a certain meal of the day, track your progress with a jar of marbles, who knows!
Determine a way to express your thankfulness with your hands. In other words, don’t just say thank you, but give your time and energy to express it.
