Sermon Recap
The message focuses on the importance of humility in your journey of spiritual formation. When you follow Jesus, you are called to adopt His way of discipleship, which is a long, intentional process. This journey isn’t about quick fixes or instant growth but requires a lifetime of allowing your mind, will, and emotions to be transformed into the image of Christ. Humility is foundational to this process, and you are invited to model the example of Jesus, who, though fully God, emptied Himself to take on the form of a servant and ultimately gave His life for you.
Spiritual formation, as James Houston said, is "the slowest of all human movements." While our culture prioritizes speed and instant gratification, becoming like Jesus requires patience and perseverance. Philippians 2:5-11 provides a powerful picture of humility, showing how Jesus willingly set aside His divine privileges to serve humanity. You are called to follow His example by embracing humility and servanthood in every area of your life.
Practically, the way of humility involves several key steps. First, you must recognize your desperate need for Jesus, acknowledging your dependence on Him for every breath and blessing. Second, you are called to lay down your personal rights and preferences for the sake of others, following Jesus’ example of serving His disciples. Third, humility requires surrender and obedience, even when God’s ways don’t align with your understanding. Finally, you are encouraged to elevate others above yourself, seeking to honor and serve them with love and selflessness.
By intentionally walking in humility, you allow God to transform you and work through you to impact the world around you. This involves daily surrender to His will, prioritizing His truth, and lifting others up in love. As you embrace the humility of Christ, you align yourself with His purpose, receive His blessings, and reflect His light to those around you. In doing so, you participate in God’s mission to transform lives and bring His kingdom to earth.

Discussion Questions
Discuss together, pushing yourself toward transparency. The more we are authentic and humble with one another, the more we can grow in Christ.
What does it mean to model the humility of Jesus in your daily life, and how can you intentionally practice serving others with a selfless heart?
(Reflect on Philippians 2:5-11 and consider ways you can lay down personal rights or preferences for the sake of others.)
In what areas of your life do you find it most challenging to surrender to God’s will, and how can humility help you trust His plan over your own?
(Think about Peter’s response in Luke 5:1-11 and how obedience, even when it doesn’t make sense, can lead to blessings.)
How can recognizing your dependence on Jesus shape your approach to prayer, relationships, and decision-making?
(Consider the contrast between the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18:9-14 and what it reveals about the posture of humility before God.)
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Jesus, who humbled Himself to serve and save us. Help us to follow His way, laying down our pride and serving others with love and obedience.
We confess our deep need for You, Lord. Transform our hearts and minds so we reflect the humility of Christ in all we do. Teach us to trust Your will, elevate others above ourselves, and live in faithful surrender to You.
Guide us on this lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. May Your Spirit strengthen us and Your love inspire us each day to walk the Narrow Way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Life Application
Surrender to God’s Will
Spend time in prayer each day asking God to reveal His ways and wisdom for your life. Commit to obeying Him, even when His direction challenges your plans or understanding. Trust that His ways are higher and lead to lasting growth and blessing.
Practice Humility in Daily Life
Find opportunities to serve others selflessly, even in tasks that seem small or insignificant. Whether it’s helping a coworker, encouraging a friend, or meeting a need in your community, approach every act with the humility of Christ, putting others before yourself.
